Spotted: South of the Mason @ The Speakeatery

Published on December 2, 2012 by in Spotted

Asbury Park has a new eatery in town (a Speakeatery… Shh!), but this is one place that you don’t want to be quiet about.  With their soft opening on Friday night, we perused the food offerings as well as the market items last night prior to the under-attended tree lighting in Press Plaza.  We have to say we were impressed with the menu items as well as the fact you can find actual produce such as romaine lettuce hearts, carrots, celery, red and yellow onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, lemons, limes, avocado, and iceberg lettuce.  There are a number of other gourmet shelf items as well including herbs, vinegar, and pasta.  We made the decision to check them out for lunch today and we were not disappointed.

Pictured above: The South of the Mason, pulled pork with BBQ sauce topped with mac and cheese on potato rolls.   We also tried the Reuben Klopak, which is more Sloppy Joe than traditional Reuben, but nomenclature aside, it was a tasty sandwich as well.

They have a fairly extensive menu as well as deli-case specials like Rolatini, Meatballs, Pasta Salads, etc.

The last thing we needed in this town is another art gallery and the thing we need the most is a grocery store/market.  The Speakeatery is a fantastic step in the right direction, with the added bonus of offering really top notch sandwiches, salads, and more.  They should do really well in the space that once housed Plan B restaurant, which now is next door to the newly relocated Showroom Cinemas.

We’re not keeping this a secret… check them out, you will be mightily impressed.

The Speakeatery is located at 705 Cookman Avenue, Asbury Park, NJ and can be found on Facebook

Spotted: Chili con Bisonte by Chef Corinne

Published on October 4, 2012 by in Spotted

Autumn is our resident chef’s favorite time of year because Fall is filled with tons of comfort foods that just bring you into the season of change.  Pictured above, Chef Corinne’s Chili con Bisonte, made with ground bison, a mix of beans, traditional seasonings, a nice amount of heat, and topped with shredded cheddar, pico de gallo, sour cream, cilantro, and a tortilla chip.

A word about Bison.  It’s grass fed, contains no antibiotics or growth horomones.  It is chock full of protein and iron and has less fat than chicken and turkey. In fact, the only things that have less fat are rabbit and squirrel.  For those thinking it may be gamey like lamb, elk or venison, fear not.  There is no gaminess at all and because it is so low in fat, there is very little shrinkage when cooking.

Spotted: Oyster Po’ Boy @ FISH Urban Dining

Published on August 27, 2012 by in Spotted

What was expected to be a miserable day weather-wise, turned into a beautiful excuse for a Sunday Funday.  What better way than to eat al fresco at FISH Urban Dining, with one of the best Happy Hour menus around.  After some Dirty Shandys and some $1 oysters on the half, we decided to feast on some Oyster Po’ Boys (pictured above) served with fresh cut fries and a haricot verts salad with grape tomatoes and feta cheese.

Spotted: Classic Gazpacho by Chef Corinne

Published on August 2, 2012 by in Spotted

Chef Corinne of Gourmazing Cuisine loves cooking with fresh seasonal ingredients as well as making healthier foods taste completely decadent.  She also takes advantage of the Summer’s bounty and what better way to celebrate the apex of Summer than with classic Gazpacho, a chilled and flavorful tomato soup with fresh vegetables, herbs, and spices, pictured above from a private party.

Also seen in the background… fresh Jersey Insalata Caprese and home made limoncello shooters, which was an accoutrement to proscuitto-wrapped cantaloupe.

Spotted: A Classic Hamburger @ Brickwall

Published on July 27, 2012 by in Spotted

It’s the start of the Olympics in London, so what better way to support the good ol’ U S of A than with a classic All-American Hamburger.  Pictured above: The classic burger @ the ubiquitous Downtown eatery, Brickwall Tavern & Dining Room served bloody with lettuce, tomato, onion and side of sweet potato fries.

Spotted: $1 Oyster Platter @ FISH Urban Dining (Happy Hour)

Published on July 22, 2012 by in Spotted

We recently shared a photo of a Jersey Salt oyster from FISH Urban Dining and the fact that they added $1 oysters to their Happy Hour menu.  Well, we had to stop by and partake and we were not disappointed.  Pictured above, a 2 dozen mix of Delaware and James River appellations complete with the accoutrements for $1 a piece. Quite the deal.  The appellations used for the $1 oysters rotate, so it’s actually a great way to try out a number of different varieties over time.

Spotted: Cavolo Nero Salad @ Porta

Published on July 20, 2012 by in Spotted

It’s feeling a little like Fall out there after the intense heat wave.  Pictured above, one of our Fall Faves from Porta, the Cavolo Nero Salad featuring Tuscan kale, watermelon radish, sun chokes, garlic croutons, Pecorino Romano cheese and a lemon vinaigrette.  This salad is so good, our mouths water the next day thinking of it.

The Curse of 610 Bangs Avenue?

TWO PROMISING CLUBS… BOTH CLOSE MERE MONTHS AFTER OPENING… WITHIN A YEAR OF EACH OTHER…

Sounds like something our friends at the Paranormal Books & Curiosities store on Cookman Avenue could be investigating.  The space at 610 Bangs Avenue sat vacant for years.  It originally housed the massive printing presses when the Asbury Park Press still resided in the building that still displays its name, carved in the granite facade at the top.  First it was Asbury Blues, which promised “Booze, Blues, and BBQ” along with some Cajun specialties.  Next it was the Press Room, a live entertainment club featuring bands, but also looking to add other performance art to become a haven for the alternative and creative types in the city.  Both came in with much fanfare and high hopes from a large number of the faithful and both closed up a few short months after opening.  Is it cursed?

Spotted: Jersey Salt Oyster @ FISH Urban Dining

Published on July 19, 2012 by in Spotted

The image above is an amazing specimen.  A Jersey Salt oyster served on the half-shell at FISH Urban Dining on Mattison Avenue, in the heart of thriving Downtown Asbury Park.

Fresh from local waters, this was finished the traditionalist way… with a squeeze of lemon, some judiciously used iced chips, and a touch of cocktail sauce.  They are extra briny, perfectly matched with the trio of accouterments provided by FISH including both champagne and malt vinegar minuettes.

And these suckers are plump, so don’t get put off by the small shell size compared to the much larger and easily identifiable Blue Points.

!!!EXTRA EXTRA!!!:  FISH has recently added $1 oysters to their Happy Hour menu, which is daily from 4-7 or Saturdays/Sundays from 12-7.

Spotted: A One-Time, Special Summer Roll @ Taka

Published on June 21, 2012 by in Spotted

It’s hazy, hot, and humid.  What better way to welcome the official start of Summer than with a day like today?

Pictured above: The one-time, special  ”Summer Roll” at Taka on Mattison Avenue.  It contained grilled shrimp, mango, avacado, and greens (sans rice), wrapped in rice paper.  It was a low-carb dream and it was amazing.  Unfortunately it hasn’t been on the menu since.

We’ve been bullying Taka himself to bring it back ever since.  Evidently, their “new” menus are at the printer and he’s waiting for delivery after a delay.  Here’s hoping to see this amazing roll added to his already impressive line-up of sushi rolls.
